How Far Right Are the 20 Republicans Who Voted Against McCarthy?

Republicans voted against California Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s bid for House Speaker includes the House’s most important agenda. far-right parliamentarianMost people are either in denial about the 2020 election, are members of the ultra-conservative Liberal caucuses, or both. Let’s take a closer look at the 20 members of Congress.

More than half of lawmakers who voted against McCarthy Explicit Deny The results of the 2020 election compared with about 15% of the 222 total members of the Republican caucuses. Nearly all of the lawmakers who voted against McCarthy frequently repeated statements that cast doubt on the 2020 election, a departure from the general Republican caucus. At least 180 of 222 House Republicans have questioned the 2020 election, according to a Times analysis.

19 is associated with the Freedom Caucus.

Most (at least 95%) of the lawmakers who voted against McCarthy were either members of the House Liberal caucuses or were recently endorsed by their campaign arm. Only 1 of them is estimated to have joined the caucus, which was founded in 2015 and is considered one of the most right-wing groups in the House of Representatives.

In Tuesday’s third round, all 20 lawmakers who opposed McCarthy voted instead for Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio. Jordan, who himself voted for McCarthy, is a founding member of the Freedom Caucus and has repeatedly questioned the 2020 election.

In the 4th, 5th and 6th rounds, held on wednesdaythe same 20 congressmen voted for Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida. is also a member of the Freedom Caucus instead of Mr. McCarthy. Donalds joined the group on the third ballot, voting for McCarthy on the first two ballots and endorsing Jordan on the subsequent ballot.

Nearly all incumbents were “dissenters.”

Fourteen of the 15 incumbents who voted against McCarthy will vote on January 6, 2021. voted to overturn 2020 Electoral College Results.

17 have been approved by President Trump in 2022.

At least 85% of lawmakers who voted against McCarthy backed Trump before the 2022 midterm elections.

Still, these legislators were steadfast in their opposition to Mr. McCarthy. Trump support of a California Republican whom he called “my Kevin.”

Nearly half of the lawmakers who opposed McCarthy represent constituencies in three states: Texas, Arizona and Florida.

McCarthy failed to win the chair despite casting six votes. By the fourth ballot, he had lost the support of another Republican — Victoria Spartz of Indiana, who initially supported Mr. McCarthy before casting an attendance vote.
